The Boston Public Library, leading a consortium of partners, has assembled images of the greatest sports battlegrounds in Boston. These images span 100 years from 1872 through 1972. These "Sports Temples" are buildings with rich histories and have become consecrated ground in the history of sports in Boston. Some are world famous, others all but forgotten; some are still standing and some have been demolished. But they all, at one time, echoed with the roar of the crowd and bore mute witness to the feats of generations of athletes. There are fifteen facilities represented in this online exhibit. Click on the image below for a short history of each Sports Temple. You can search through the images, get more information about this site, or purchase reproduction prints by following the links above. Images in this site come from the Boston Public Library or one of its partner institutions - The Boston Athenaeum, The Bostonian Society, Massachusetts Historical Society, Metropolitan District Commission Archives, New England Sports Museum, Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, and the State Library of Massachusetts. We are looking for feedback on the library's recent electronic projects. Could you take a minute to fill out a survey about your experience using this or other electronic resources from the Boston Public Library? Please click here to participate. |
